Mission, History, & About the Injured Police Officers Fund

The Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to our mission of “helping to reduce the financial burden suffered by Police Officers and their families in the event of a line of duty injury or death by providing monetary assistance to these officers and their families.”

Founded in October 1982, the IPOF was created in response to the tragic shooting of LVMPD Motor Officer James MacLaren, who was shot in the head during a routine traffic stop. Though Officer MacLaren survived, his injuries forced him into medical retirement. In a powerful act of generosity, the MacLaren family donated the proceeds from the very first fundraiser—“A Night Out With the Stars,” hosted by Sheriff John Moran and his wife Goldie—to officially launch the IPOF.

Since its inception, the IPOF has grown significantly. Initially supporting officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Henderson Police, North Las Vegas Police, Boulder City Police, and the Southern Region of the Nevada Highway Patrol, the organization expanded over the years. In 1992, the City of Mesquite Police Department joined. In 1995, under Sheriff Jerry Keller’s leadership, the IPOF welcomed additional agencies, including the Las Vegas City Detention and Enforcement, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Police, Clark County Park Police, and the Clark County School District Police.

The IPOF is governed by sworn law enforcement officers representing each member agency. Each agency appoints a primary and alternate representative—volunteers selected by their respective Chiefs of Police or, in the case of LVMPD, by the Sheriff of Clark County.

What We Do

We assist with costs not covered by industrial insurance following a serious line-of-duty injury or death. This may include:

  • Replacement of damaged equipment
  • Childcare expenses not normally incurred
  • Other unforeseen costs on a case-by-case basis

Community and Fundraising

The IPOF hosts two major fundraising events each year:

  • The Annual IPOF Golf Tournament
  • The Annual IPOF Classic Car Show

Additionally, we collaborate with local nonprofit and community organizations throughout the Las Vegas area, such as Behind The Blue and Southern Nevada C.O.P.S. to further support law enforcement families and promote community engagement.
